Skype is the world’s most popular VoIP and instant messaging service. This allows users to send text messages, create videos and make calls over the Internet. With Skype Credit, Premium Accounts and Subscriptions, users can also call fixed and mobile numbers at fixed rates. Skype was introduced in 2003 and today accounts for around a third of the minutes for international calls. Skype uses P2P technology to connect users across multiple platforms, including desktops, cell phones and tablets. The quality of the call (according to your Internet signal) and the additional features such as call flow, conference calls and secure file transfer are outstanding. There have been some criticisms regarding the use of bandwidth and security vulnerabilities of the program.
After downloading and installing Skype, you’ll need to create a unique user profile and Skype name. You can then search for other users in the Skype folder or call them directly from your Skype name. Voice chat includes a conference call, secure file transfer, and extremely secure end-to-end encryption. Video chat is available in higher bandwidth connections, making the tracking of interactions with distant families / friends significantly more interactive. Video conferencing and screen sharing make Skype popular in the corporate marketplace. The Skype text chat client includes group discussions, chat history, message editing, and emoticons. With Skype, you can also call landline and mobile numbers through a paid service.
Easy to handle
The Skype interface is very intuitive and easy to use. The left navigation displays all the standard features of the messaging service such as profiles, logon status, contacts, and history. You’ll also find the Skype directory, the group options, a search box and premium call buttons. The right side (main window) opens the content you selected. Individual contacts will see a text box, a chat history, and call options.
With fast Internet connections, the quality of Skype calls for voice and video calls is excellent. The peer-to-peer hybrid client-server system provides better sound quality than most VoIP services. However, if you have a slower Internet connection, voice calls may be interrupted or delayed. Video calls are temporary and detailed. The text chat is affected only by very bad connections. The Call Quality button gives you detailed information about the expected call quality for each of your contacts (since the quality depends on the internet connection of both parties).
